"Au pair" is a French term, meaning "on par." As an au
pair, you will live with a host hamily as a member of their family,
assisting with child care while experiencing everyday life in a new
culture. Some of your duties may include dropping the children off and
picking them up from school, playing with them and helping them with their
homework. You will also be asked to perform light housekeeping, such as
helping to keep the children's room tidy and cooking light meals for them.
Au pairs are not, however, responsible for housework unrelated to the
children, nor are they responsible for managing the entire household
should the parents go away.
Although the placement should not be considered a "job," there is a great amount of responsibility involved in caring for children. Being an au pair also involves a certain degree of self-motivation; what you get out of the program will be primarily your responsibility, not necessarily that of the host family. All au pair positions require a great deal of adaptability, a good sense of humor, patience, hard work and especially a genuine love of children.
